Pine Needle Basketry by Vicki Phillips

Love Birds

While I was making this basket I was thinking about Mourning Doves. I know some people find them annoying, but I think they are the most graceful and peaceful birds to watch and listen to and they are always entertaining. I like how they show affection for each other by preening each other and cooing. During mating season the male does a beautiful dance for the female while lifting his wings and bobbing his head side to side and cooing a beautiful song. They always seem to be so happy and in love.
I made this basket using dyed green Long Leaf pine needles, dark brown artificial sinew, transparent gold/smoked topaz luster heart Czech pressed glass beads and a pottery center with a pair of birds on it. The birds on the pottery base seem to be carrying something in their beaks. It could be a piece of fruit or a branch, but I like to think that it is a piece of each others heart...true love!
Enjoy!

  1. OK, to borrow the vernacular of another generation...this is AWESOME! Love hearing about your mourning dove inspiration and seeing all these TERRIFIC photos. In the second to the last photo your basket looks simply ethereal and very much at home in those branches. Sharp and clear with that beautiful soft background. I'm sure little dove eggs are tucked safely inside.

Where I grew up, mourning doves were plentiful and the first amazing sounds of the cool morning. Those magical few hours before the sun heated our asphalt into giant bubbles by midday. That was a time before the local population of humans burst wide open. When I go home now, there are no dove calls in town. But at sunrise or sunset, out in the surrounding countryside, they can be heard still and are lovely. Like your post.
    Hugs,
    Chris

  2. Chris- Thanks for your thoughtful comments and I'm glad you like this basket. I finally found a sewing needle that is thin enough to put the beads over at the same time that I stitch, plus strong enough to go through pine needles. This kind of beaded basket goes much faster now. There were a few mourning doves here the other day, so I think spring is on its way! Or maybe they never left:)
