Ginger and Molasses

We enjoy making gingerbread men and gingerbread houses every holiday season. When my children were younger we took the time to make everything from scratch. We would spend hours cutting out the gingerbread house pieces and gingerbread men and other shapes. As the years have passed, we have resorted to using gingerbread house kits and even gingerbread cookie mixes. A few years we even used graham crackers to make our houses.
One of my favorite gingerbread house memories wasn't at Christmas time, but it was on Halloween when my children were about five and eight years old. They were home sick and couldn't go out trick-or-treating, so we decided to make a gingerbread haunted house. They had fun making the dough, drawing the design, rolling and cutting it out and putting the house together for several hours. They even designed and put in windows and we put a candle inside of the house so we could admire their window drawings. After we finished the haunted house they got dressed in their costumes and we ate the entire house! Who knew you could have so much fun with ginger, molasses and a few other ingredients!
I made this basket using natural brown and two different shades of dyed brown Long Leaf pine needles, brown artificial sinew, gingerbread man ceramic beads and a gingerbread men pottery base. Enjoy!

  1. Wonderful basket, memories and pics. Those basket bases you are using now, done by the woman potter, are really a fun mix with your work.

I'll be darned. I had no idea there were gingerbread mixes. You can tell who does the grocery shopping in our house. A trip to the grocery is a bit of culture shock to me at this point. Gingerbread mixes. Of course. Rick is the best cook/grocery shopper. Far better than I EVER was. Yummy meals and smaller bills.

Back to the pre-work week house cleaning. A few days off has been heaven.
Hugs and love to you and the family,
    Chris

  2. Love the basket! And it is not racist. It's so cute.
That gingerbread house we made when I was young was so good. I should make one with Kayla like that! It was the orange frosting that made so yummy!
