I know summer has arrived when I see dragonflies darting through the air. They are like trained acrobats that can fly backwards, up and down and turn on a dime. I love to watch them stop and hover, and I wonder what they will do next. It is like watching a choreographed dance performance with their iridescent wings and bright translucent colors. They do all of this while capturing mosquitoes, too! Dragonflies have many symbolic meanings across many different cultures. I appreciate that dragonflies spend most of their lives as nymphs and only fly for a few months, which can symbolize living life to the fullest and in the moment. Also, in Mayan folklore, the dragonfly is considered the goddess of creativity.
These baskets were inspired by these beautiful and fascinating creatures that we call dragonflies!
"Wings Of Peace"
I made my "Wings Of Peace" pine needle basket using natural green Longleaf pine needles, purple artificial sinew, matte opaque lilac Indian glass round beads, a lilac sea glass "peace" bead and a three-dimensional purple dragonfly pottery base. This basket is 5-3/4" round x 2" tall.
"Lake Flyer"
I made my "Lake Flyer" pine needle basket using a variety of dyed teal Longleaf pine needles, teal Brazilian waxed poly cord and a teal and grayish blue three-dimensional dragonfly pottery base. This basket is 5" long x 4-1/2" wide x 1-3/4" tall.
"Wings On The Water"
I made my "Wings On The Water" pine needle basket using dyed brownish red Longleaf pine needles, earth tone orange artificial sinew, Czech bronze wash table-cut picasso glass dragonfly coin beads and a three-dimensional metallic blue dragonfly pottery base. This basket is 5-1/4" round x 2" tall.
ENJOY!
