Pine Needle Basketry by Vicki Phillips

The New Natural

For almost 20 years I only made my baskets out of pine needles from Ponderosa Pine or occasionally from White Pine trees of the Northwest and natural raffia. After discovering pine needles from the Florida Long Leaf and Carolina Loblolly Pine trees for sale on Ebay a new creative world was discovered. I also found fellow basket crafts people selling Irish waxed linen, colored waxed nylon, dyed pine needles, wood and nut slices, agates and a variety of other materials. You name it and you can find it on Ebay! I started to experiment with color, rocks and beads when making my baskets. I am having a lot of fun working with the new materials, however, the majority of my family still likes the natural looking baskets that I made before. I created this basket using pine needles from the Loblolly Pine tree and natural artificial sinew with a natural Brazilian agate center to try to put a new twist on the baskets from my past. Maybe in another 20 years or so my family will start to see the beauty in the colored baskets too! Enjoy!
