Every spring I start a basket that reflects what is growing in my garden at the time. With the best of intentions, I try to finish the basket, but the garden diverts my attention away from basketmaking. I love to watch what I call the "dance of the flowers" as every week brings new blooms in place of the old. I always think there is magic in the dirt, because each spring the violas, daffodils, crocuses, hyacinths and other spring bulbs and flowers start the flower dance. They are soon replaced by the alliums, irises, bleeding hearts and other late spring surprises. Then come along the hydrangeas, daisies, lilies, clematis, pinks, and other early summer beauties. Now it is August and I am enjoying the dahlias, huge lilies, poppies, delphiniums, sea holly, nasturtiums, marigolds, geraniums, lobelia and an array of never ending colors and wonderful fragrances.
I call my garden the "jungle garden" and you can see why in the photos. I like when plants self-seed in the garden and I sometimes move them or I just let them grow where they are. The garden is a never-ending source of inspiration for my basketmaking. I also enjoy gathering various vines and flowers to use in future baskets. I usually work on baskets for gifts, special occasions and custom orders in the summertime. Maybe I will get back to my strawberry basket this fall! I hope everyone gets to enjoy the magic of flowers in this beautiful season. Enjoy!
