Pine Needle Basketry by Vicki Phillips

Blue Moon Rising

We have had several beautiful clear nights in the Pacific Northwest this winter, which has allowed us to have amazing views of the full moons, however, not a blue moon. A blue moon, which isn't really blue in color, only occurs when there are two or more full moons in a calendar month. There are no blue moons for 2022, so we will have to wait until August 30, 2023 to see the next blue moon. The saying "once in a blue a moon" really does apply to the blue moon and other things that don't happen that often!

The jasper stone that I used for the center of this basket came from the McDermitt Caldera in the Blue Mountains region of Oregon. Blue Mountain jasper is a quality porcelain jasper and is highly sought after for the beautiful orbs of blue, green, olive and pink when polished or set in resin. The colors and pattern of the jasper made me think of the moon.

"Blue Moon Rising"

I made my "Blue Moon Rising" pine needle basket using dyed dark blue Longleaf pine needles, denim blue Irish waxed linen thread, beautiful full blue moon lampwork beads placed as if rising to the sky and a colorful Blue Mountain jasper stone set in resin for the center base. This basket measures 10-1/2" x 9" x 5". Enjoy!
