Lava Bay

I was thinking about my 'ohana (family) in Hawaii while I was making this basket. They were the first people to take me to some of the most pristine beaches in this tropical paradise and introduce me to snorkeling in the early 80's. I remember the first time that I went, I was pretty hesitant, because I am not a great swimmer and I hate to get my face wet. However, once I saw the beautiful lava formations covered with sea creatures and the abundance of colorful fish swimming all around me I was hooked. I was so busy looking at all the amazing sea life around me that I forgot that I was swimming in really deep water, something I rarely have ever done before. I didn't panic and I knew the salt water and flippers were helping keep me afloat. However, scenes from the movie "Jaws" did cross my mind a few times! The memories of seeing and swimming by my first sea turtle, whale and, yes, even a small shark will always hold a special place in my heart.

When I was almost finished with this basket, the Kilauea volcano erupted on the Big Island. Interesting how something so devastating, can also be so fascinating at the same time. Amazing to watch new land being formed, but sad to watch so many homes and pristine beaches and bays being destroyed. My heart goes out to all of those who have lost so much.

I made my "Lava Bay" basket using reddish brown and brown dyed Longleaf pine needles, brown artificial sinew, red lava beads and a beautiful scallop shell center base. This basket measures approximately 10-1/2" round by 1-1/2" tall. Enjoy!
