I love this time of year when the robins come back to build their nests and know that warmer spring days are on there way. As I was taking photos of this basket a robin was sitting on the fence post next to me. I wonder if the robin was curious why I had a robin's nest and maybe she was thinking she could use it again? I love watching birds gather things that they will use to build their nests with. Birds are very resourceful and clever and I always learn something from them. When I look at how they create their nests I am always amazed and how beautifully constructed they are. This is why I believe birds were the first basket makers!
The color of this basket not only reminded me of robin eggs, but it also reminded me of when my daughter was six years old. The year was 1993 and Crayola was celebrating their 90th anniversary by having a contest to name their new crayon colors and introduce their new 96 count box of crayons. She was very excited to enter, because the winners would get their name on the crayon that they named for a short time and a free trip to Universal Studios. We had fun coloring all afternoon and coming up with names for the colors of the new crayons. After we sent her entry to Crayola she would ask almost daily if she had won. Finally, about two months later, my daughter received a congratulations letter and a commemorative Crayola tin in the mail. One of her names that she entered was chosen to be put on the one of the new crayons...ROBIN'S EGG BLUE! She was so exited, however, she was only a runner-up, because another person had entered the same name before she did. She cried and cried and didn't understand why she wouldn't get her name on the crayon and why she wouldn't get to go to Universal Studios. It took many days to try and get her to understand why she won, but she didn't really win and why she didn't get the big prize. Every time I see a box of 96 count Crayola crayons, I start to laugh and wonder if my daughter still likes crayons...especially Robin's Egg Blue!
I made this basket with an egg shaped turquoise blue agate base, natural green Long Leaf pine needles, faux turquoise bird fetish beads and stitched it together with turquoise artificial sinew with a twisted and wrapped rim to look like a robins nest. Enjoy!
