One of my favorite places that we had the opportunity to visit while in Montana last summer was the Hungry Horse Dam and Reservoir Recreation Area. The dam is gigantic and we felt like little specks when we walked across it looking down 564 feet at the canyon and South Fork Flathead river below us. We never realized that this is where our hydro power starts from until this visit. The history of the dam and how it was built was really interesting, too. The surrounding area was beautiful and the air was so crisp and fresh. One of the highlights, was seeing an Osprey on its nest along with its mate flying back and forth. Even though is was partly cloudy on the day that we visited, the views were still spectacular.
I tried to capture some of the colors and shapes of this magnificent place in my "Hungry Horse" pine needle basket. The Oregon thunderegg stone that I used as the base reminded me of the shape of the reservoir on the map on the wall at the visitor center. I used dyed green Longleaf pine needles and stitched it together with dark green artificial sinew to try to capture some of the colors that I saw in the trees and plants. I added sweetgrass to remind me of the wonderful fresh scent of the outdoors. The natural mixed color quartz beads represent the dam and the variety of colors of the multi-colored beautiful variety of rocks that we saw. This basket measures 9-3/4" wide x 8" deep x 3-3/4" tall.
ENJOY!
