Song of the Humpbacks

On our journey to Antarctica a few years ago we came across a "super group" of over one hundred humpback whales while crossing the Drake Passage in the Southern Ocean. Standing on the deck of the ship looking out at a sea full of these gentle rolling giants was awe inspiring and one of the most exciting and amazing things that I have ever seen. The whales graceful movements and playful spirits were a joy to watch. It was almost as if they were trying to wave their flukes at us to say hello! The air was filled with mist from their blowholes and it felt magical. It almost felt like something you would read about in a Jules Verne novel, but it was real and happening all around us. Unbelievable!

My basket making continues to be influenced by my trip to Argentina and Antarctica and this basket is an example of that. I made my "Song of the Humpbacks" basket using natural brown and dyed dark blue Longleaf pine needles, bright blue artificial sinew, blue Peruvian ceramic whale beads and a gorgeous crystallized multi-colored blue and white agate center base that resembles the icy waters of the Southern Ocean.
Enjoy!
