Pine Needle Basketry by Vicki Phillips

Mariposa Point

I made this basket for my sister-in-law and her family for their new cottage in the Georgian Bay. The first time they walked on their new property they saw butterflies everywhere, especially at the point. My sister-in-law eventually named their new place Mariposa Point. Mariposa is the Spanish word for butterfly. Plus, on occasion you will see someone drinking a Mariposa at the point at sunset!
The original family cottage is green and we all spent many summers painting and scraping green paint. In years past, it didn't seem like an official trip to The Bay without getting green paint on ourselves. Our clothes and skin always seemed to be splattered with green paint. I am sure my sister-in-law and family don't miss green paint at their new cottage! I wanted them to have a little bit of cottage green at their new place to remind them of the old cottage. Some traditions should never die!
I used natural green Long Leaf pine needles, tan artificial sinew, green marble butterfly and nugget beads and a ceramic base with green butterflies. Enjoy!

P.S. Thank you for letting us stay at your beautiful new cottage this summer!

  1. I loved this basket. Aunt Lynn did too. Hunter could not believe you actually made this and was impressed I learned how.

  2. This is amazing BG. I love all the personal elements you included in the design. I used to live in an old home in Pacific Grove, CA that was in the migration path for Monarch butterflies. We could sit in the window and watch thousands of them as they clustered in the trees a few feet away. I have no doubt the sis-inlaw was thrilled with this piece. BEAUTIFUL basket and beautiful shots of it.
